Striving for the best family portraits, one of the primary questions I get asked, as a photographer, is “What should we wear?”

As a photographer, I want you and your family comfortable and relaxed. This will ensure the most fabulous pictures. These are pictures you are going to hang on your walls and cherish for many years to come.

Here are some simple tips for clothing choices.

  • Coordinating colours, not matching. Pick a couple of colours and choose clothes that will fit in this colour scheme.
  • Try to wear solid coloured clothing, this way we see everyone’s faces and not one person is standing out or have one or two people wear a pattern.
  • Limit patterns. Personally I don’t mind a mix of colour. However, limit how many people wear a pattern as it can distract from the final image.

  • Look at your home décor. Do you like bright colours? Neutral? If you are going to be hanging these portraits in your home, you want to make sure the colours go with the colour scheme of your home.
  • Say no to characters and logos. Just like patterns, characters and logos can be distracting.
  • Think Classic. By choosing simple, classic clothes you will help give your images a timeless feel
  • Choose a top with sleeves at least to the elbow. Your arms take up so much skin and will draw attention away from your faces.
  • Keep it simple. Have everyone dress in their chosen outfits and then assemble in front of a large mirror. Check the overall look of the grouping for symmetry and balance. Is it pleasing to the eye or is there a colour or pattern that just doesn’t seem to work. If there is, simply have that person choose a different colour or style of garment. When you have a look that looks good in the mirror, it will also look great on your wall.

Go through your wardrobe first before heading out to the store to purchase items. You might have everything you need. If you are really stuck, contact me and send me a picture of what you have in mind. After all we live in a modern world and texting is another great option.

Stay comfortable and relaxed. No matter what you choose, make sure everyone feels comfortable and relaxed in their clothes. This will lead to beautiful smiles and natural poses, and you will end up with a fabulous family photo that you will love displaying for years to come.
