A Quiet Wedding Day Surrounded by Forest, Family, and Meaning

Victoria and Brian’s wedding was intimate in the best possible way — small, peaceful, and centred around the people closest to them. Their day began at Sandman Signature Sherwood Park Hotel before everyone made their way to Elk Island National Park for a quiet outdoor ceremony surrounded by trees, late-summer greenery, and open air.

Nature was not just a backdrop for their wedding — it felt like part of the reason the day belonged there. Victoria especially has a deep love for the outdoors, and Elk Island gave their ceremony the kind of peaceful, natural setting that suited them beautifully.

With immediate family gathered close and Brian’s sister officiating, the ceremony felt personal without needing anything elaborate. It was the kind of wedding where the emotion came through in the simple things: hands held, soft smiles, children watching nearby, and a forest setting that gave the whole day room to breathe.

After the vows, we stayed in the park for portraits along the trails, by the water, and in the grass. What began as a shorter Whispered Vows wedding naturally opened into a fuller story — getting ready, a first look, family, ceremony, movement, laughter, and quiet portraits in one of Alberta’s most peaceful national park settings.

A Quiet Start in Sherwood Park

Before the ceremony, Victoria and Brian gathered at Sandman Signature Sherwood Park for the first part of the day — quiet details, family nearby, and a few emotional moments before heading into the park.

Some of the sweetest moments came after the formal parts of the day — walking, twirling, laughing, and letting the afternoon breathe.

THE LOCATION

An Alberta National Park Wedding Surrounded by Forest and Water

Elk Island National Park was a natural fit for Victoria and Brian’s wedding. With their love for the outdoors, the forest paths, open grass, quiet water, and late-summer landscape gave the day a peaceful setting that felt personal to who they are.

Instead of a traditional venue, their ceremony unfolded in the open air, with immediate family gathered close and nature all around them. The day also began at Sandman Signature Sherwood Park Hotel, giving them a comfortable getting-ready location before travelling into the park. Together, the two locations created a wedding story that felt simple, personal, and beautifully grounded in the Sherwood Park and Elk Island area.

OUR APPROACH

Calm, Documentary-Inspired Wedding Photography

Small weddings deserve the same care, attention, and storytelling as full wedding days. Victoria and Brian’s celebration was intimate, but it still held so many important pieces — getting ready, family connections, a first look, a quiet ceremony, portraits, movement, and the in-between moments that made the day feel real.

Our approach is calm, observant, and gently guided. We give direction when it helps, especially for portraits and family photos, but we also leave space for the natural moments to unfold. At Elk Island National Park, that meant paying attention not only to the people, but also to the setting — the forest, the water, the tall grass, and the quiet outdoor feeling that mattered so much to them.

For couples planning an intimate wedding, elopement-style ceremony, or small family celebration near Edmonton or Sherwood Park, thoughtful photography matters. The goal is not to make the day feel bigger than it was — it is to photograph it honestly, beautifully, and with care.

PLANNING NOTE

Planning an Intimate Wedding at Elk Island National Park

A small wedding can still hold a full story. Victoria and Brian’s day included getting ready, a first look, travel between locations, a family ceremony, portraits, and relaxed moments afterward. For couples who love nature and want their wedding day to feel peaceful, personal, and outdoors-focused, Elk Island National Park can be a beautiful setting.

Because it is a national park, couples should always check current Parks Canada wedding guidelines, timing, access, and any required permits before finalizing plans. A calm timeline also makes a big difference. Leaving room for walking, family photos, quiet portraits, and natural pauses helps the day feel relaxed instead of rushed.
